Delayed Refugee Case Hearings:

NRN-Canada Draws Attention of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada

August 2009: NRN-Canada National Coordinating Council, a representative national umbrella organization of the people of Nepali origin in Canada, has written a letter to Mr Brian Goodman, Chairperson, Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada requesting the Board to schedule delayed hearings of Nepali refugee cases. NRN-Canada has written this letter based on community interaction program in Brampton, Ontario and after deliberations from the National Coordinating Council’s meeting.  The Canadian Council for Refugees and a number of Immigration Lawyers were consulted prior to writing the letter.

The letter says, “We have been told that there are a number of other claimants in the Nepali community who have been waiting for the hearing of their cases for 2 years or more”.   Some cases are there waiting for hearings for almost three years. “We understand that many claimants are currently facing long delays, but when comparing with other nationalities, it appears that Nepali claimants are waiting disproportionately long periods”.  NRN-Canada therefore requested the Board to take necessary measures to ensure that hearings are scheduled without further delay for those Nepali refugee claimants who are waiting so long.
